Gabriel Kuri on Classification, Community, and Crisis

Gabriel Kuri, born in Mexico City in 1970, reflects on his artistic practice, community, and recent projects. He was part of the Talleres de los viernes with Gabriel Orozco, Damian Ortega, Dr. Lakra, and Abraham Cruzvillegas. Kuri now lives in Brussels, where he had a major exhibition 'Sorted, Resorted' at WIELS Center for Contemporary Art, ending in January. The show focused on materials like plastic, paper, metal, and construction waste, exploring recycling and classification. In Mexico, his work is included in 'On the Razor's Edge' at Colección Jumex, curated by Patricia Marshall, featuring emergency blankets as symbols of crisis. Kuri also exhibited at Dublin Hyde Gallery, Esther Schipper in Berlin (hosted by Walter Storms Galerie), and GAK Bremen with duo gerlach en koop. He discusses his relationship with kurimanzutto gallery, founded by his brother José, and his belief in art as presence, not just digital migration. During quarantine, he reread Emanuele Coccia and reflects on the pandemic's economic and semantic effects on art.
