Gabriel Calparsoro Launches Fundación Calparsoro in Spain
Gabriel Calparsoro, a collector hailing from San Sebastián, established the Fundación Calparsoro to exhibit his collection of 180 works. The foundation's first event took place at the Museo Lázaro Galdiano in Madrid, featuring Isaac Julien's video installation 'Once Again … (Statues never die),' which critiques the valuation of African art within Western institutions. His collection includes works by North American artists such as Adam Pendleton and Glenn Ligon. This year, the foundation contributed two pieces by Barbara Hammer to the Museo Reina Sofía. Calparsoro was awarded the Premio A for best private collection by Fundación Arco and intends to partner with educational institutions and marginalized groups. He is also part of Proyecto Catapulta, which supports Spanish artists, with June Crespo being the inaugural Catapulta Prize winner.
