Gabi Ngcobo Appointed Director of Kunstinstituut Melly

institutional · 2026-04-24

Gabi Ngcobo has been appointed as the new director of Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam, succeeding Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy, who has led the institution since 2018. This change follows an open recruitment process and aligns with the museum's rule that limits directors to a maximum of six years in the role. Ngcobo, well-known in the realm of independent curation, currently serves as the curatorial director at the Javett Art Centre in Pretoria, South Africa. Notably, she curated the 2018 Berlin Biennale, titled We Don’t Need Another Hero, and co-curated the 32nd São Paulo Biennial in 2016. She will officially start her new role in January 2024.
