Future Feminism Returns to Aarhus 2017 with Ecological Focus

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Aarhus, European Capital of Culture 2017, hosts the sequel of the exhibition 'Future Feminism' at O Space, a contemporary art and video art platform in the port area. The project, running until September 3, features 13 artworks, performances, talks, and workshops. It is organized within a residency program promoted with the British Council, hosting artist Anohni. She invited Kembra Pfahler and Johanna Constantine to reprise a show originally held in 2014 at Hole Gallery in New York's Bowery. That earlier edition involved five artists: Anohni (then known as Antony), Pfahler, Constantine, Bianca Hunter, and Sierra Casady, with a 13-day performance program. After three years of retreat, the group reconceptualized the project with an ecological feminist message: women's role is crucial to prevent ecological collapse, calling for a new feminine collective consciousness. Anohni, born in 1971, is a British-American transgender singer, composer, and artist, formerly known as Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons. She co-founded the Blacklips collective with Constantine in the 1990s. Juliana Engberg, program director for Aarhus 2017, describes Anohni's practice as corporeal and visceral, and Future Feminism as a provocative platform centering feminine sensibility for species survival. Aarhus is the second Danish city to be European Capital of Culture after Copenhagen in 1996, and also European Region of Gastronomy in 2017.
