Füssli Retrospective at Musée Jacquemart-André Explores Dream Worlds
The Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris is currently hosting a significant retrospective of Johan Heinrich Füssli (1741–1825), running until January 23, 2023. Curated by Christopher Barker, Andreas Beyer, and Pierre Curie, this exhibition showcases 60 pieces, with installation design by Hubert Le Gall. It emphasizes Füssli's fascination with Shakespearean drama, classical and Nordic legends, as well as representations of women. Influenced by actors David Garrick and Hannah Pritchard, key works include "Hamlet and the Ghost of His Father" (1793) and "Lady Macbeth Seized with the Daggers" (1812). The highlight, "The Nightmare" (1782), resonates with the era's intrigue in dreams. The exhibition also features "Lycidas" (1796–99) and "Milton's Vision" (1799–1800), showcasing Füssli's early exploration of the unconscious, predating Freud.
