FuoriFormato Festival Brings Dance and Video Dance to Genoa's Villa Durazzo

The FuoriFormato festival, organized by Teatro Akropolis, Rete Danzacontemporanea, and Augenblick, returned to Villa Durazzo in Genoa for four days, featuring thirteen performances and twenty films from Europe, Canada, and the United States. The program explored how the body absorbs detail and translates it into a relationship with the world. Caterina Basso of the Aldes school presented "Un minimo distacco," a solo confronting earth, dry magnolia leaves, statues, and natural twilight light, with a soundscape of frogs croaking. The choreography was visceral and abstract, born from survival instinct, with Basso isolating herself with earplugs before reconnecting to the world with Bruce Springsteen's "I'm on Fire" and an ukulele. Nicola Galli's "Changeling" trilogy referenced Merce Cunningham, Dan Flavin's neon lights, Olafur Eliasson's diaphanous colors, and robotic Harlequin movements, creating a clean, formal dance simulating planetary landing. Federica Dauri's "Kheperer" drew from Kafka's "Metamorphosis," using her body as a boundary between insect and animal under plexiglass, with references to Rodin and Burroughs. The festival took place at Villa Durazzo, a decadent noble bastion opposing the Ilva steel plant devastation in Cornigliano.
