Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid Opens with Ian Cheng Exhibition

The Fundación Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Madrid has opened its first exhibition in a semi-nomadic phase, hosted at the Fundación Fernando De Castro in central Madrid. The inaugural show features American artist Ian Cheng (b. 1984, Los Angeles) with his trilogy of AI-generated simulations titled 'Emissaries', curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist. The works on view are 'Emissary in the Squat of Gods' (2015), 'Emissary Forks At Perfection' (2015-16), and 'Emissary Sunsets the Self' (2017). The foundation also announced the first edition of its Residency for Young Foreign Curators, running from February to May 2020, with participants Marta Cacciavillani (Italy), Laura Plant (UK), and Lxo Cohen (Netherlands/UK). The residency model mirrors the Italian program, offering full immersion in the Spanish art scene and culminating in a final exhibition. The foundation's expansion to Madrid began in 2017, initially targeting a space at Matadero but abandoned due to structural and bureaucratic issues. Talks with Madrid's municipal administration for a permanent venue are reportedly progressing.
