Fundación Masaveu Peterson presents Alexander Calder exhibition in Madrid

exhibition · 2026-05-25

On the 50th anniversary of Alexander Calder's death (1898-1976), the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson has opened 'Obras invitadas: Alexander Calder' in Madrid, running until June 21, 2026. The exhibition is part of the larger 'Colección Masaveu. Arte español del siglo XX. De Picasso a Barceló' show, which features over 100 works of 20th-century Spanish art and continues until July 19, 2026. The Calder display includes works dated between 1945 and 1975, highlighting his sculptural imagination from the small 'Blue, orange, red' (formerly owned by gallerist Pierre Matisse) to the large mobile 'Crag'. It also showcases Calder's ventures into painting, jewelry, and tapestry, such as the watercolor 'Nepal' and the tapestry 'La poire, le fromage et la serpent', created for the US bicentennial and ironically referencing American patriotism. The exhibition is curated by María Dolores Jiménez-Blanco, professor of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid, and is structured in 14 sections. It places Spanish art in dialogue with Calder's work, featuring artists like Picasso, Miró, Dalí, Chillida, and Tàpies.
