Fundación Mapfre expands to Barcelona with photography-focused programming
Fundación Mapfre will launch a second venue in Barcelona in October 2015, housed in a 19th-century residence originally constructed for the Garriga-Nogués family. The Madrid-based foundation, known for its photography holdings, plans to present two photography shows annually alongside one exhibition in a different medium. Opening with a post-Impressionist exhibition organized with the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the program includes loans of paintings by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, and Pablo Picasso. In February 2016, a presentation of Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto's work will follow, and in May 2016, an exhibition by U.S. photojournalist and Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson is scheduled. The foundation's existing photography collection and its expansion underscore its institutional growth. The Art Newspaper reported the announcement on September 15, 2015.
