Fulvio Morella's Braille Art and Olympic Medal at INJA Paris
Italian artist Fulvio Morella (born 1971 in Grosio) presents his solo exhibition at INJA – Institut National Des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris from June 26 to September 22, 2024. The show features his tactile art, including the medal "Ailes de Mouette" (seagull wings) created for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Commissioned by the Italian association Cramum and INJA, the medal celebrates the bicentennial of Louis Braille's tactile writing system (invented 1824–1825) and the French Olympic Games. Made in 22 copies of 999 silver, it bears the inscriptions "dal limite all'infinito" and "ali di gabbiano" in "braille stellato" (star braille). The medal will enter the collections of Monnaie de Paris and Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Morella, winner of the 2023 Alfredo d'Andrade Career Award, is known as the "braille artist" for his multisensory works. His "Blind Wood" project, started in 2019, combines painting, sculpture, and braille. The exhibition also includes works reinterpreting ancient monuments like the Temple of Delphi and the Theater of Tusculum. Curated by Sabino Maria Frassà and Stéphane Gaillard, the show emphasizes collaborative viewing between sighted and non-sighted visitors.
