Fulvio Magurno's 'Animulae' at Museo di Villa Croce, Genoa

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Fulvio Magurno (Ravanusa, 1958), a Sicilian photographer who lived in Naples and later moved to Genoa, presents 'Animulae' ('little souls') at the Museo di Villa Croce in Genoa until April 5. The exhibition, organized in collaboration with Galleria Capoverso, features eight medium-small format photographic prints and one large-format print that explore the lightness and evanescence of the soul in contrast with the body. Magurno states, 'As a rational man I do not know if the soul exists, if it is distinct from the body, if it is immortal, but as an artist I am fascinated by the theme and here I try to render the evanescence of the soul compared to the consistency of flesh and body with works that highlight this dualism. To accentuate the spirituality of the soul I chose a single vibrant blue color.' This blue references Yves Klein's Anthropometries, an artist Magurno admires deeply. Iconographically, Magurno drew inspiration from the crucifixes of Anton Maria Maragliano, a Genoese painter active between the 17th and 18th centuries. The result is an interesting linguistic fusion. 'Animulae' is also the title of the leporello produced for the occasion.
