Fuksas's Nuvola to become permanent exhibition and cultural space post-COVID

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The Roma Convention Center 'La Nuvola', designed by Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome's EUR district and opened in October 2016, is pivoting to new uses after the pandemic forced the cancellation of 90 event days and caused an estimated €4 million loss for its operator Roma Convention Group (owned by Eur Spa). CEO Antonio Rosati announced plans to open the venue year-round with permanent exhibitions, concerts, cinema, a bookshop, a bistrot, and study spaces, removing fences to create an 'agorà'. The center, which cost €380 million, previously hosted the 'Più Libri Più Liberi' fair and was to debut the 'Roma Arte in Nuvola' art fair in May 2020 (postponed to 2021). Rosati also confirmed a bid to host the G20 in 2021, while future congresses include the National Assembly of Labor Consultants (May 20–22, 2021), the 50th National Congress of Sirm (October 6–9, 2022), and the IEEE International Conference on Communications (2023). Eur Spa is owned 90% by the Ministry of Economy and 10% by Roma Capitale.
