Fuksas-Designed Duomo Metro Station in Naples to Open July 2021
Naples' Duomo metro station on Line 1, designed by Massimiliano Fuksas and Doriana Mandrelli, will open in July 2021 after a long delay caused by the discovery of a 1st-century AD temple foundation at eight meters depth. The project, first presented in 2004, was radically altered by the archaeological find. The station features a transparent dome in corten steel and glass in Piazza Nicola Amore, allowing the ancient temple to be visible from outside. Inside, passengers descend 40 meters to platforms via backlit steel panels that change color with the time of day and weather. Travertine flooring and stairs, and a lava stone exit staircase complete the design. Mayor Luigi de Magistris called it one of the world's most beautiful stations. The temple, built by Emperor Augustus for the Isolympic Games, will remain accessible via an independent path even after the metro opens. The station is part of Naples' acclaimed metro system, often cited as the world's most beautiful.
