FTC Bans Foreign Robot Imports, Citing National Security and AI Protectionism

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has enacted a comprehensive prohibition on the importation of advanced foreign robots, encompassing humanoids, quadrupeds, and wheeled models. This decision, influenced by a partisan and Trump-aligned FTC, raises national security issues regarding data collection by foreign humanoids and aims to safeguard American robotics firms from competition with China. This initiative aligns with the broader strategy of the Trump administration to bolster the US AI sector, which has also contemplated restricting open-source Chinese AI models. While some US robotics firms, like Ghost Robotics, led by CEO Gavin Kenneally, have welcomed the ban for its potential to enhance cybersecurity, critics argue it may hinder US research, as 90% of recent university robotics papers utilized affordable robots from Unitree, China's leading humanoid company. The price disparity is notable: a Unitree quadruped is priced around $4,600, whereas a similar Boston Dynamics robot costs $278,000. Unitree is set to go public this week, targeting a valuation of nearly $6 billion, while US companies such as Figure and 1X have yet to achieve large-scale sales. Although the FTC's order includes numerous exceptions, its symbolic significance is evident: the administration considers humanoid robotics a crucial area of AI that requires protection.
