FSB relaunches Dieter Rams door handle in all-metal design

Franz Schneider Brakel (FSB), a German hardware manufacturer, has reintroduced the FSB 1138 door handle, initially crafted by Dieter Rams in 1986. This updated version boasts a robust all-metal aluminum design. The handle emerged from a workshop facilitated by Otl Aicher, which included architects like Mario Botta and Peter Eisenman, aiming to redefine door handles as points of interaction between humans and architecture. Rams' original design, featuring a circular rose and an index-finger recess, embodies his philosophy of "less but better." The handle was discontinued in 2005 due to the use of ineffective thermoplastic. The new iteration will develop a distinctive patina, with Rams, now 94, approving the enhancements, which maintain the design's essential character, as noted by Dr. Klaus Klemp.
