Fronteras nómadas: Electronic and Video Art Festival in Mexico City

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The Festival International des Arts Électronique et Vidéo, organized by the Laboratorio de Creación Artística Alameda, took place from October 12 to 30, 2007, in Mexico City, Mexico. Themed 'Fronteras nómadas' (Nomadic Borders), the festival explored boundaries between private and public space, technology and society, and contemporary art. Held in a secularized Baroque church in the city center, the venue itself symbolized a space between historical and modern Mexico. The festival featured interactive works such as Ricardo Miranda's 'Carreta Nagua', a video monitor in a pram showing the Mexican TV character Chapulín Colorado, and Fran Ilich's sound installation 'Subcomandancia' playing recordings of Subcomandante Marcos and protests in Tepito. Videos were broadcast on Televisa, a major TV network. Workshops included Hernando Barragan's mobile phone writing workshop. Collective works were presented under the title '(in) Communautés', including a piece by Eder Castillo, Luis Hernandez, and Anne-Marie Schleimer using chat to build virtual architecture. The festival awarded a prize to Paula Sabina for her video performance 'Quo modo Deum' about solitude. The festival aimed to be nomadic, fostering encounters between scientists, artists, academics, and the public.
