FRONT International Cleveland Triennial Cancels 2025 Edition and Ceases Operations

FRONT International, a prominent contemporary art triennial in Cleveland, Ohio, has been shut down, canceling its third edition scheduled for July 16, 2025. The organization announced its closure 18 months before the planned opening, citing shifts in public and private funding priorities toward community needs in 2024 compared to its 2016 launch by founder Fred Bidwell. Artist Asad Raza was set to curate the 2025 edition, with previous iterations led by Michelle Grabner in 2018 and Prem Krishnamurthy in 2022. The triennial had attracted significant audiences and critical acclaim, including a Forbes article last year praising Cleveland's art scene and FRONT's contributions. In a statement, board chair Helen Forbes Fields and executive director Fred Bidwell expressed disappointment over not realizing the vision of artistic director Asad Raza and chief curator Magdalena Moskalewicz, thanking artists for their roles in the 2018 and 2022 editions. The triennial was noted for its impact on the Midwest U.S. art landscape, with its folding marking the end of a major cultural initiative.
