From Villa delle Rose to MAMbo: The Evolution of Bologna's Modern Art Museum

institutional · 2026-04-27

In 1916, Countess Nerina Armandi Avogli donated a prestigious villa in Bologna's Saragozza district to establish a modern art gallery. Opened in 1925 as Villa delle Rose, it initially displayed 160 19th-century works. In 1936, art historian Guido Zucchini reorganized the collection to prioritize 20th-century art. A pivotal moment came in 1977 when the Galleria d'Arte Moderna organized the Settimana Internazionale della Performance, featuring body art and multimedia practices by artists including Marina Abramović and Ulay, Gina Pane, Hermann Nitsch, Luigi Ontani, and Franco Vaccari. In 1995, the GAM became the first Italian museum to be transformed into an institution with its own board of directors. Under director Danilo Eccher in 1997, Spazio Aperto was created for experimental art and emerging artists. In the 2000s, the museum relocated to the Manifattura delle Arti cultural hub, opening in 2007 in the former Forno del pane on via Don Minzoni, renamed MAMbo (Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna). Today, MAMbo operates five venues: the main museum, Villa delle Rose, Museo Morandi, Casa Morandi, and Museo per la Memoria di Ustica, holding over 3,500 works. Spanning 9,500 square meters, it is one of Italy's most important contemporary art museums. It maintains a special relationship with the annual Artefiera and the Art City Bologna program.
