From Pucci to Armani: A Century of Airline Uniform Design

publication · 2026-04-26

A feature on Artribune traces the evolution of airline hostess uniforms from functional garments to aesthetic statements reflecting social change. The first recognizable airline uniform was created in 1944 by Hollywood costume designer Howard Greer for TWA, featuring a blue wool suit with a detachable collar. In the 1960s, Emilio Pucci designed the Gemini 4 collection for Braniff International Airways with colorful modular jersey dresses and astronaut helmets. Pierre Cardin created A-line minidresses for Union de Transports Aériens in 1968, while Cristóbal Balenciaga designed for Air France. In the 1970s, Valentino Garavani made a plum polyester uniform for TWA, and André Courrèges designed for UTA with shiny leather coats. Renato Balestra created an iconic green pleated skirt uniform for Alitalia, later updated by Giorgio Armani in 1991. Yves Saint Laurent designed for Qantas Airways with a smoking jacket and kangaroo print. Recent collaborations include Vivienne Westwood for Virgin Atlantic (2014) with recycled materials, and Ozwald Boateng for British Airways (2023) with gender-aware tailoring.
