Frigerio Design Group Wins Competition for Enel Fusina Power Plant Green Conversion

Frigerio Design Group, an architecture firm promoting 'slow architecture' since 1991, has won the competition for the ecological transition of the Enel power plant in Fusina, Venice lagoon. Their project, titled Resilience Lab Grid, was selected by a commission comprising representatives from Enel, Università di Venezia IUAV, Città Metropolitana, and Comune di Venezia. The initiative is part of a broader plan to convert all coal-fired plants in Italy into eco-sustainable structures by 2025. The project focuses on nature, clean energy, community, and local history. It develops along two lines: new buildings with public areas for socio-cultural development, and the existing building enhanced for aesthetic and symbolic value. The architecture is visually dynamic and lightweight, inspired by the fractal geometric natural element, integrating fragments of fields and cultivations into abstract patterns covering buildings and plants. The modular system allows buildings of varying sizes based on function, with the Enel Pavilion redesigned as a welcome and information hub promoting sustainability, circular economy, and innovation. Architect Enrico Frigerio stated that the new energy spaces aim to regenerate the environment, enhance company identity, and generate a sense of community belonging, combining nature and people, industry and environment, innovation and technology.
