Frieze Week 2026: Zwirner Tribeca Opens, Dinosaur Dealer Emerges, and Fair Gossip

festival-fair · 2026-05-15

Frieze Week in New York kicked off with the opening of David Zwirner Tribeca (formerly 52 Walker), presenting 'Statics of an Egg' curated by Martin Germann, featuring Japanese artists Yu Nishimura and Kenji Ide. Nishimura joined Zwirner's roster last year, introduced by Marlene Zwirner. Spazio Amanita, helmed by Caio Twombly and Tommaso Rositani Suckert, opened 'A Land Before Time' with three Maiasaura fossils and a John Chamberlain sculpture, brokered by fossil dealer Freddy Leiva. Leiva, a former restaurant manager and studio manager for Donald Baechler, now advises on fossils and art. Eliza Douglas debuted her first New York solo show at Gagosian Park & 75, curated by Francesco Bonami, who will curate seven exhibitions there. Frieze VIP preview at The Shed saw Cindy Sherman's new works at Hauser & Wirth, and Fair Warning hosted its fourth annual backgammon tournament at Nine Orchard, won by Paul de Froment. Galleries are moving to Tribeca: Gratin, Karma, and Maxwell Graham. Wet Paint columnist Gabi Vidal-Irizarry reported on the week's events.
