Frieze to Fund UK Pavilion at Venice Biennale for First Time
Frieze, the global art fair and magazine brand, has announced an unprecedented partnership with the British Council to finance the British Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale Arte in 2024. This marks the first time an art fair has directly funded a national pavilion at the Biennale. The five-figure sponsorship will support the project of Anglo-Ghanaian filmmaker John Akomfrah, who will present a new commission. Frieze will also promote the exhibition on its social channels. The British Council's development director Andrew McGlynn described the partnership as 'essential' given the ambitious scope of Akomfrah's project, which required greater sponsor support. Frieze London director Eva Langret stated that supporting artists and institutions is central to Frieze's mission, and that the partnership is a natural extension of its 20th-anniversary initiatives. Akomfrah, born in Accra in 1957 and based in London, is a founding member of the Black Audio Film Collective and was knighted in 2023. His work explores memory, aesthetics, postcolonialism, and diaspora experiences, aligning with the Biennale's theme 'Stranieri Ovunque' curated by Adriano Pedrosa. While the art market has long had a presence at the Biennale through galleries, Frieze's direct sponsorship of a pavilion is seen as a sign of growing commercial-sector interest in nonprofit cultural collaborations.
