Frieze New York's Spotlight and FYI Sections Highlight Historic Women Artists and Hudson Tribute

Frieze New York, running through May 6 on Randall's Island, introduced the FYI section this year, a tribute to the late dealer Hudson featuring solo booths of artists he championed, curated by Matthew Higgs. Artists like Raymond Pettibon (David Zwirner), Takashi Murakami (Gagosian), Andrew Masullo (Nicelle Beauchene), and Tom of Finland (David Kordansky) were presented, alongside 15 others at the Hudson Foundation booth, many now with blue-chip galleries. The Spotlight section, in the fair's southern end, offered strong historic presentations of women artists, including Merrill Wagner from the 1970s at Zürcher, breakthrough works by Mira Schor at Lyles & King, vibrant pieces by Emma Amos at Ryan Lee, vintage assemblages by Betye Saar at Roberts Projects, and a joint presentation by Nicole Klagsbrun and Marc Selwyn featuring Cameron, a painter, actress, and witch known for visionary images. Cameron's work, such as 'Hekas Hekas (dancing pair),' reflects influences from collaborators like Wallace Berman, L. Ron Hubbard, Kenneth Anger, and Dennis Hopper, and was created with techniques including acid trips with her daughter, evoking Sienese primitives and Leonora Carrington. The thematic subsections like FYI and Spotlight aim to provide revisionist curating, distinguishing top contemporary art fairs.
