Frieze New York 2021 moves to The Shed with drastically reduced gallery count

Frieze's New York edition for May 2021 will relocate from its traditional Randall's Island tent to The Shed arts center in Manhattan's Hudson Yards. The fair will feature approximately 60 exhibitors, representing less than one-third of its previous scale. This marks a significant reduction from the 2019 edition, which included over 190 galleries. Global director Victoria Siddall emphasized that creativity, flexibility, and collaboration led to this new opportunity for a smaller fair. The physical event will be complemented by Frieze's online viewing rooms, which the organization expanded this year as an alternative to physical gatherings. The New York fair launched in 2012 and has consistently used a custom-built tent structure on Randall's Island until this relocation. The shift represents a major downsizing of one of New York's premier art fair experiences. The announcement highlights how pandemic conditions are reshaping traditional art fair models through hybrid approaches.
