Frieze New York 2019 appoints museum directors as curators

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

Frieze New York has announced that the 2019 edition will be curated by directors of major US museums, including Patrick Charpenel of El Museo del Barrio, Franklin Sirmans of Pérez Art Museum Miami, Laura Hoptman of The Drawing Center, and Courtney J. Martin of DIA Art Foundation. Charpenel and Sirmans will oversee the new Diálogos section, focusing on Latin American contemporary art in conjunction with El Museo del Barrio's 50th anniversary, and the Just Above Midtown (JAM) section. Hoptman will curate Spotlight, and Martin will manage the Frieze Artist Award. This move comes as Frieze competes with the Armory Show, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019 and has regained prominence after some fairs shifted back to March. Frieze's artistic director Loring Randolph stated it is an honor to collaborate with these institutional leaders.
