Frieze Los Angeles 2019 to Feature Cinematic Frieze Projects at Paramount Studios

festival-fair · 2026-05-04

The first edition of Frieze Los Angeles is set to take place from February 14 to 17, 2019, at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood, marking a departure from the city's previous unsuccessful attempts at hosting art fairs like Paris Photo and FIAC. The curated section, Frieze Projects, will be located on the studio's backlot, which resembles a constructed New York City, showcasing sculptures, performances, and installations by 12 artists, including Barbara Kruger, Paul McCarthy, and Tino Sehgal. Kruger will present thought-provoking stickers, such as "Who will write the history of tears?" while McCarthy will unveil a large inflatable piece. Curator Ali Subotnick remarked that the unique setting compels artists to interact with a cinematic backdrop, while executive director Bettina Korek highlighted the importance of art in the cultural context.
