Frieze Art Fair 2013 Showcases Emerging Artists and Restrained Works on Randall's Island

Frieze Art Fair 2013 concluded its run on May 13 at Randall's Island in New York, with tickets and transportation selling out on the final weekend. The fair featured over 180 galleries, approximately half from Europe, spread across an area equivalent to three football fields. A central section highlighted Frame and Focus selections, dedicated to galleries founded less than six years ago or after 2002, each presenting single artists or curated projects new to art fairs. Frame artist Stewart Uoo, exhibited by New York's 47 Canal, had a concurrent show at the Whitney Museum, while Jana Euler appeared in the Focus display at dépendence. Julia Rommel's monochromes at Bureau offered a minimalist contrast, and Cheim & Read's booth included Pat Steir's Birthday Painting. London galleries like Maureen Paley showcased Paul P's portraits and Maaike Schoorel's Vanitas, with Birgit Jürgenssen's Polaroids at Alison Jacques Gallery noted for playful innocence. White Cube presented Damien Hirst's medicine cabinets and Tracey Emin's neons, repeating prior offerings. Paul McCarthy's large red Balloon Dog, displayed by Hauser and Wirth at the North entrance, provided a spectacle. The fair balanced commercial scale with refined moments, requiring a $42 entrance fee.
