Frieze 2018: Hudson Foundation Tribute and Cameron's Spotlight Presentation Highlight Thematic Sections

festival-fair · 2026-04-22

At the 2018 Frieze art fair, the newly introduced "FYI" section paid tribute to the late dealer Hudson through solo booths featuring artists he championed. Curator Matthew Higgs organized presentations including Raymond Pettibon from David Zwirner, Takashi Murakami from Gagosian, Andrew Masullo from Nicelle Beauchene, and Tom of Finland from David Kordansky, alongside fifteen additional artists at the Hudson Foundation booth. The "Spotlight" section in the southern marquee area featured significant historical presentations of women artists, with Zürcher showing Merrill Wagner's 1970s works, Lyles & King presenting breakthrough pieces by Mira Schor, Ryan Lee exhibiting vibrant works by Emma Amos, and Roberts Projects displaying vintage assemblages by Betye Saar. A joint presentation by Nicole Klagsbrun and Marc Selwyn featured Cameron, known as a painter, actress, and witch, whose work included visionary images influenced by collaborations with Wallace Berman, L. Ron Hubbard, Kenneth Anger, and Dennis Hopper. Her creations, some resulting from acid trips taken with her nine-year-old daughter, included a torn book cover painting reminiscent of trecento Sienese primitives and Leonora Carrington. The thematic sections at Frieze demonstrate how curated zones like "Focus," "Frame," and "Spotlight" provide revisionist and revelatory perspectives within contemporary art fairs.
