Frieder Burda: The Private Collector Who Built a Public Museum

artist · 2026-04-23

The Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, established by German collector Frieder Burda in 2004, is currently hosting the exhibition 'Die Bilder tun was mit mir,' which will be available until June 20. This showcase includes roughly one hundred pieces from Burda's collection, which he began amassing in 1968 with a purchase from Lucio Fontana. Following the death of his father, Franz Burda, in 1986, Frieder dedicated himself to art, focusing on works by Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Georg Baselitz. Designed by Richard Meier, the museum features both historical and contemporary artists. The exhibition, curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann and Patricia Kamp, investigates innovative pairings and themes through Burda's collaboration with advisors.
