Frieda Toranzo Jaeger's Queer Utopias at Venice Biennale

At the 60th Venice Biennale, curated by Adriano Pedrosa under the title "Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere," Mexican artist Frieda Toranzo Jaeger presents a monumental installation of 20 canvases spanning over 15 meters in length and 4 meters in height. The work engages with the legacy of Mexican muralists Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, infusing their influences with a feminist and queer perspective aimed at transcending capitalist, colonial, and exploitative structures. Born in Mexico City in 1988, Toranzo Jaeger critiques representations of femininity and masculinity in late capitalism, often using embroidery to pierce the canvas—an act she calls "epistemological disobedience against painting." Her paintings are self-supporting, freeing them from the wall and allowing them to occupy space like sculptures. Their car-like forms serve as allegories for non-conforming bodies, exploring how symbols of freedom can become constraints. Viewers are invited to walk around and sit inside the works, experiencing them without imposed narratives. Despite her queer utopian vision, she does not consider herself an activist; rather, she sees painting as a tool to analyze the male gaze and underrepresentation of women, advocating for a decolonization of imagination and feelings.
