Fridge exhibition at Galerie Fraîch'Attitude refrigerates art in Whirlpool cabinets

Curator Laurence Dreyfus organized the group exhibition 'Fridge' at Galerie Fraîch'Attitude in Paris from October 17, 2002 to January 15, 2003. The show features artworks displayed inside six high-end black Whirlpool refrigerators, with additional works around them. Dreyfus's concept contrasts with the relational, convivial art of Daniel Spoerri, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres by presenting a static, refrigerated display. The minimalist white interiors of the fridges evoke the white cube gallery space, and the setup requires visitors to open doors to view works, triggering an alarm. Artists include Michel Blazy (with his film 'Green Pepper Gate'), Germain Bourré (with 'A-mesure', featuring fish in melting ice), Natacha Lesueur (focusing on traces and food processes), Fabrice Eola, Frenhofer, Goma, Christian Jankovski, Sarah Lucas, Maurice Scheltens, and Dorothée Selz. The exhibition can be seen as a burlesque take on viewer-controlled visibility, referencing El Lissitzky's 1926 'Abstraktes Kabinett' for the Hanover Museum. The catalogue is described as dismissive and pretentious, like the fooding movement, but includes Valérie Mrejen's 'Finir son assiette' taxonomy.
