Frida Kahlo's Intimate World Revealed at Palais Galliera

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A new exhibition at the Palais Galliera in Paris, titled 'Frida Kahlo, au-delà des apparences' (Frida Kahlo, Beyond Appearances), offers an unprecedented look into the artist's personal life, moving beyond clichés. Running until March 5, 2023, the show presents over 200 objects from Casa Azul in Mexico City—the house where Kahlo was born and raised—including clothing, correspondence, accessories, cosmetics, medicines, and medical prostheses. These personal effects were hidden by her husband, muralist Diego Rivera, after her death in 1954 and rediscovered only in 2004. The exhibition explores how Kahlo constructed her identity through her appearance, notably her adoption of traditional Tehuana dresses and pre-Columbian necklaces, which served both to assert her Mexican heritage and to cope with the physical disabilities resulting from a tram accident at age 18. For the first time in France, the display also features films and photographs, creating a visual narrative of her life free from stereotypes. The collection includes hand-painted corsets and prostheses, offering insight into her resilience and self-fashioning.
