Frida Escobedo's Design for Met's New Tang Wing Revealed
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has revealed the initial designs for its upcoming Tang Wing, crafted by Mexican architect Frida Escobedo. This 11,000-square-meter expansion, which has garnered $550 million through private donations, is anticipated to open its doors by 2030. Escobedo, who has led Taller Frida Escobedo since 2006, marks a historic milestone as the first woman to receive an architectural commission for the Met, established in 1870. The five-story addition will maintain a height below that of the original 1880 structure and will provide nearly 50% more exhibition space, featuring around 6,500 square meters dedicated to modern and contemporary art, including pieces by notable artists like Diane Arbus and Salvador Dalí. The design incorporates stacked volumes with terraces on the fourth and fifth floors, utilizing limestone reminiscent of Kevin Roche's 1970s expansion, alongside glass facades that transition to stone screens for natural light filtration. Ceiling heights will range from over 6 meters for larger installations to 3.5 meters for more intimate displays. The top level will offer dining options with views of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. At just 38, Escobedo was the youngest designer for the Serpentine Pavilion in 2018 and was also chosen in 2024, alongside Moreau Kusunoki, for the Centre Pompidou renovation.
