Frick Collection Reopens with Vermeer Exhibition After $220M Renovation
After five years of closure and over $220 million in renovations, the Frick Collection in New York has reopened, preserving its Gilded Age character while expanding with 2,500 square meters of new spaces including temporary exhibition galleries, a café, conservation labs, and a 218-seat auditorium. The renovation, led by Selldorf Architects, notably opens the grand staircase—previously private—to visitors, leading to ten rooms transformed into galleries for rarely seen works. The reopening is inaugurated by 'Vermeer’s Love Letters,' curated by Robert Fucci of the University of Amsterdam, running until September 8, 2025. The exhibition explores the motif of letters in Vermeer’s mature work, featuring three masterpieces displayed together for the first time: 'Mistress and Maid' (c. 1667) from the Frick’s collection, 'The Love Letter' from the Rijksmuseum, and 'Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid' from the National Gallery of Ireland. The show examines how Vermeer used letters as compositional devices to probe private life and female interiority.
