Frestas Triennial Explores Walking as Political and Spiritual Gesture in Sorocaba

festival-fair · 2026-03-29

The 4th edition of Frestas – Triennial of Arts, titled 'do caminho um rezo,' opened at Sesc Sorocaba on February 27, 2026. Curated by Luciara Ribeiro, Naine Terena, and Khadyg Fares, the exhibition presents 188 works, including 26 new commissions, from 102 participants comprising artists and community initiatives from Brazil and abroad. The triennial frames the act of walking as a political, spiritual, and knowledge-building gesture, connecting artistic, educational, and community practices. It proposes an attentive listening to the Sorocaba territory, traversing its historical, visual, and social layers. The title synthesizes concepts from professor and artist Tadeu Kaingang ('path as prayer'), sociologist Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui's Andean notion of 'Thaki,' and quilombola thinker Antônio Bispo dos Santos's idea of 'Afro-Pindoramic confluences.' The works, developed from Black, Indigenous, peripheral, and dissident experiences, occupy both the Sesc unit and city spaces like the Capela João de Camargo, Clube 28 de Setembro, Monumento Pelourinho, and Monumento à Mãe Preta. The triennial runs until August 16, 2026, with visiting hours from Tuesday to Friday, 9 AM to 9:30 PM, Saturdays 10 AM to 8 PM, and Sundays and holidays 10 AM to 6:30 PM, closed April 3. Frestas asserts itself as an initiative that decentralizes the contemporary art circuit, recognizing Sorocaba and the interior of São Paulo as a territory of confluence between artistic and community relations.
