Frestas Triennial Confronts Colonial History and Social Issues in Sorocaba
The Frestas Triennial's second edition, overseen by curator Daniela Labra and themed 'Between post-Truth and Events,' is taking place from 12 August to 3 December 2017 at SESC Sorocaba and various locations in Sorocaba, Brazil. This event showcases the work of 60 artists, addressing colonial histories and modern social challenges. On the opening day, Guarani activists Poty Poran and Eunice Martims offered an alternative perspective on indigenous displacement. Traditional Guarani urns were installed around the city by Maria Thereza Alves and Maximino Rodrigues. Nunca's mural 'Fundadores' (2017) features Guarani figures, while Miro Spinelli's 'Gordura Trans' critiques gender essentialism. The Guerrilla Girls present banners alongside an interactive blackboard, and the O Nome do Boi collective highlights corruption with wallpaper and a decaying piece of beef. André Komatsu's 'Autômatos' examines transparency. This exhibition is organized by the non-profit SESC, which is financed through a 1.5% payroll tax on commerce workers.
