Frestas Triennial and Afro-Brazilian Art Collection Highlight Issue 74 of arte!brasileiros
The 4th edition of Frestas – Triennial of Arts opened at Sesc Sorocaba on February 27, featuring 102 participants and 188 works, including 26 commissioned pieces. A collection of 666 works by 135 artists, assembled over a decade by two North American researchers with guidance from Pierre Verger and Emanuel Araújo, has been donated to Muncab. The Oscar Niemeyer Museum is extending its exhibition space beyond walls by placing contemporary artworks in Vila Velha Park. Casa Brasil launched with a shared curatorial approach, showcasing decolonial and feminist works from artists across Brazil, including pieces by users of a mental health institution. Grada Kilomba's video installation Opera to Black Venus poses the question, 'What would the bottom of the ocean tell us tomorrow, if it were emptied of water today?' An exhibition at MUPA explores the relationship between art and the sky, connecting climate collapse with poetic reflections on humanity's connection to nature. A new Sesc unit in São Paulo's center, set to open in June, will offer an open, tree-lined space with cultural and sports activities. In Alagoas, a village along the São Francisco River is surrounded by art and nature.
