French photographer Vincent Morla recreates iconic photos at home during lockdown
During France's COVID-19 lockdown, which lasted until May 11, 2020, French guitarist and photographer Vincent Morla began recreating famous photographs using household objects. Confined to his Paris apartment, Morla shared the parodies on Facebook and Instagram, captioning them: "If you can't go to the museum, bring the museum home." His series includes a reinterpretation of William Klein's 1955 "Gun 1" where a spray bottle replaces the gun; Vivian Maier's "Self Portrait Mirror Red Clothing Shop" with a smartphone substituting for her camera; Sebastião Salgado's "Iguane marin" featuring a cleaning glove with clothespins; Josef Koudelka's 1968 "Czechoslovakia" from the Prague Spring, with a compass instead of a watch; Steve McCurry's "Afghan Girl" using Perrier bottle caps for green eyes; and Martin Parr's 1997 "Benidorm, Spain" transforming sunglasses into teaspoons. Morla, who has released three series on Facebook, stated he wanted to recreate a museum atmosphere at home. The project parallels a GAM Torino Instagram contest inspired by Helmut Newton, asking users to submit "wrong photos."
