French philosopher Bernard Stiegler dies at 68

Bernard Stiegler, the French philosopher known for his work on technology, humanity, and labor, died on August 6, 2020, at age 68. Born in 1952 in Seine et Oise, he was a regular presence in contemporary art conferences in Italy, including the 2019 conference "Progettare la Memoria: Strategie del digitale" at the University of Salerno and a lecture at Macro Asilo titled "Oltre la società automatica." Stiegler founded and directed the IRI (Institute for Research and Innovation) at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 2006, which later became an independent research association with members including the Centre Pompidou, Centre for Contemporary Culture Barcelona, Microsoft France, Goldsmiths College University of London, University of Tokyo, and others. In 1987, he co-organized the exhibition "Mémoires du futur: bibliothèques et technologies" at the Pompidou. His books include "La Technique et le temps" (1994) and "La Télécratie contre la démocratie" (2006). Stiegler was arrested in 1978 for armed robbery and spent five years in prison, where he began studying philosophy. He later earned a degree from the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His memoir "Passare all'atto" caused scandal in French cultural circles. His death was announced by the Collège international de philosophie.
