French Museums Bridge Past and Present with Contemporary Art Interventions

exhibition · 2026-04-23

In 2004-2005, three major French cultural institutions launched parallel initiatives integrating contemporary art into historic settings: Contrepoint at the Louvre, Correspondances at the Musée d'Orsay, and Les Visiteurs at national monuments including the Château de Chambord. At the Louvre, Tunga's installation 'À la lumière des deux mondes' hung under the Pyramid, while six artists created works with the Sèvres manufacture for Contrepoint 2. At Orsay, Braco Dimitrijevic's 'Van Gogh enfin au paradis' placed Van Gogh's self-portraits among oranges, and Anthony Caro's 'Déjeuner sur l'herbe II' confronted Manet's painting. Les Visiteurs, initiated by the DAP under the Ministry of Culture, placed FNAC works in twenty historic sites across France, curated by Bernard Blistène. Directors Henri Loyrette (Louvre) and Serge Lemoine (Orsay) championed the programs, which aimed to engage captive tourist audiences and reconnect contemporary artists with heritage. Future invited artists included Brice Marden, Robert Mangold, Ellsworth Kelly, and Jeff Wall. The initiatives sparked controversy in the French art world but gained institutional permanence, with the Louvre hiring a dedicated contemporary art curator, Marie-Laure Bernadac.
