French Moderns from Monet to Matisse at Palazzo Zabarella

Palazzo Zabarella in Padua hosts 'Da Monet a Matisse. French Moderns 1850-1950', featuring 59 works by 45 artists from the Brooklyn Museum. The exhibition, in its eighth iteration after stops in Canada, the US, and South Korea, spans movements from Realism to Surrealism. Highlights include Matisse's 'Donna in poltrona', Degas's 'Donna nuda che si asciuga', and Monet's 'Palazzo del Parlamento, effetto della luce solare'. The show is organized into four sections: landscape, still life, nude, and portraits. Cultural director Fernando Mazzocca and patron Federico Bano aim to trace French art evolution. However, the exhibition lacks effective storytelling, with sparse didactics that fail to explain non-French artists' ties to Paris, such as Giovanni Boldini, Aleksandr Yakovlev, and Lajos Tihanyi. Some labels are poorly translated. The Brooklyn Museum was the first US institution to collect French modernism, now holding 500,000 pieces.
