French modernist Christian Gimonet's Bourges legacy explored
Christian Gimonet (1935–2023) was a French architect who spent over 50 years working in Bourges, integrating modernism into the city's historic fabric. Trained at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts under Louis Arretche and influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, and Le Corbusier, he established his practice in 1969. Key projects include Maison Bouriant (1968), a multi-use building with a slate roof and ceramic tiles by Jean Lerat, and Le Dunois (1977), featuring a typographic mosaic. Gimonet was among the first in France to rehabilitate industrial wastelands and advocate for sustainable urban heritage, according to curator Elke Mittmann. His apartment, gifted to Bourges by his wife Jacqueline, is slated to become a cultural centre. Gimonet retired in 2018, completing 229 of 510 studies.
