French feminist book 'I Hate Men' sparks censorship backlash and becomes bestseller
Pauline Harmange's 2019 book 'Moi, les hommes, je les déteste' (I Hate Men) became a surprise bestseller after a French government advisor attempted to suppress it. The book, which argues that men use defensive mechanisms to reject accusations of misogyny, was initially published by small nonprofit press Monstrograph in 400 copies. On the day of release, advisor Ralph Zurmély sent an official warning letter to Monstrograph, accusing the text of misandry, though he never read the book. The threat backfired: French media framed the advisor's attack as 'cancel culture,' sparking national debate. Monstrograph sold out its print run and auctioned reprint rights to major publisher Seuil, which has sold 20,000 copies. Translation rights have been acquired for 17 languages, including Italian. Harmange, a 26-year-old communications graduate and volunteer at a rape support center, had built a following on French Patreon-like platform Tipeee discussing feminism, self-help, and environmentalism. She faces online harassment and death threats. The controversy reflects French feminist radicalization amid disappointment with #MeToo's impact and Macron's appointment of an interior minister accused of rape. Harmange has three books in progress, including a novel and an essay on her abortion experience.
