French Design Team Overhauls High-Speed TGV Trains with Modular Interiors

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

France's SNCF and Alstom have enlisted over 2,000 designers to redesign the TGV Inoui high-speed trains, set to enter service in 2026. The project, unveiled on March 11 at Gare de Lyon in Paris, focuses on comfort, sustainability, and modularity. The trains are 97% recyclable, can carry up to 740 passengers, and feature interiors by French firm AREP in collaboration with Japanese studio Nendo. The design palette draws from 1970s pastels, with soft, river-inspired forms for seats and lighting. Exterior aerodynamics reduce energy use, while reflective paint minimizes cooling needs. All interior elements are interchangeable for quick reconfiguration. The crew was involved in design from the start to improve safety. The restaurant car now includes a bistro-style bar, and bike storage areas have been added. The TGV Inoui brand launches with a new red circular logo. The trains will operate on domestic routes and connections to Italy, Spain, and Belgium.
