French Cinemas See Record Summer Attendance Amid Heatwave and Blockbusters

French cinemas have experienced a record-breaking summer in 2026, with an average of 640,000 daily admissions since July 1, a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The surge is attributed to a combination of successive heatwaves driving people into air-conditioned theaters and a crowded slate of major blockbusters. The million-admission mark was exceeded on July 29, August 1, and August 2, according to the Fédération nationale des cinémas français (FNCF), which represents all theater operators. Notable films contributing to the boom include Christopher Nolan's 'L'Odyssée', which has become his biggest hit in France with 5.7 million admissions, and 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' starring Tom Holland, which drew 5.1 million viewers. French cinema also performed well, with the two-part biopic on Charles de Gaulle attracting 4.7 million cumulative spectators, and the comedy 'De la Comédie-Française' reaching 783,000 admissions. David Obadia, general delegate of the Association française des cinémas d'art et d'essais, noted that while blockbusters dominated, the summer lacked significant art-house releases, stating, 'We missed our own Spider-Man.' Despite this, the FNCF projects 185 million admissions by year-end, a level not seen since before the Covid-19 pandemic. The heatwaves have made small apartments unbearable, turning cinemas into temporary refuges, but the strong film lineup has been a crucial factor in drawing audiences.
