French art book publishing: a fragmented ecosystem of public and private players

publication · 2026-05-28

The French art book publishing industry is quite diverse, lacking comprehensive data on its publishers. Notable recent shutdowns include Nicolas Chaudun in 2014, Somogy Éditions d’art in 2022, and Éditions du Regard in 2025. Antoine Gründ, who leads the SNE’s Art and Fine Books group, indicates that the number of new publishers is keeping pace with those closing. The market features 16 public publishers, 15 owned by private groups, 23 independents, and 6 affiliated with foundations or galleries. Public entities like GrandPalaisRmn and Musée du Louvre thrive on institutional sales, while private ones include group-owned (Gallimard) and foundation-linked (Fondation Cartier). Independent publishers experience significant seasonality, with 80% of their sales occurring in November and December. The sector has also witnessed acquisitions, such as Hachette’s purchase of Hazan in 1997 and Chargeurs Museum Studio’s acquisition of Skira in 2024.
