French actress Nathalie Baye has died at age 77. She was celebrated for her work with director François Truffaut on three films: Day for Night (1973), The Man Who Loved Women (1977), and The Green Room (1978). Baye also collaborated with Jean-Luc Godard on Every Man for Himself (1980) and Detective (1985). Internationally, she gained recognition for playing the mother of Leonardo DiCaprio's character in Steven Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can. Her career began in the 1970s and spanned decades, including recent work with Canadian director Xavier Dolan on Laurence Anyways (2012) and It's Only the End of the World (2016). Baye won four César Awards, France's highest film honor: twice for Best Actress for The Girl from Trieste (1982) and The Young Lieutenant (2005), and twice for Best Supporting Actress. In 1999, she received the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for A Pornographic Affair. She had been suffering from Lewy body dementia, a neurodegenerative disease that affects mood, movement, and can cause hallucinations.
