Freewell and Brandon Li Launch World's Slimmest Locking Hybrid VND/CPL Filter
Freewell, in collaboration with filmmaker Brandon Li, has introduced the Brandon Li x Freewell VND/CPL System, claimed to be the world's slimmest locking hybrid variable neutral density (VND) and circular polarizer (CPL) filter with a 100% mechanism-free design. Developed over two years, the system eliminates traditional internal components to reduce bulk and failure points. The filter allows independent adjustment of polarization via a green ring and neutral density via a black ring, combining both functions in a single 50-gram unit. It integrates with an included MD32 filter for a one-to-10-stop range and can be paired with additional diffusion filters. A magnetic locking mechanism prevents accidental detachment. Available in Basic kits (67mm, 72mm, 77mm, 82mm) and Cine Kits (86mm, 95mm), prices start at $350 for smaller sizes and $500 for larger ones. Each kit includes a base ring, hybrid VND/CPL, ND32, front and back caps, and a storage pouch. Freewell's product designer Gary Lu emphasized the goal of removing mechanical dependency for reliability and compactness, while Li highlighted the system's ability to reduce friction during travel and location shoots.
