Freeman Alley: New York's Street Art Hub and Two Concurrent Exhibitions
Freeman Alley, a cul-de-sac in New York's Lower East Side, has evolved into a street art epicenter. The alley's walls serve as open-air galleries, fueled by the Untitled Hotel, a creative hub for graffiti and mural artists. The hotel, in partnership with the New Museum, offers free admission to guests and features a rooftop bar decorated by Canadian street artist Stikki Peaches. Two galleries anchor the alley: Candice Madey and the historic Tibor De Nagy. At Candice Madey, John Houck's exhibition "Perfect Temperature Lava" (through March 2, 2024) showcases his transition from photography to painting, with large canvases depicting volcanoes, avalanches, waterfalls, and seascapes overlaid with hyperrealistic objects from his family. Houck never paints from photographs but relies on intentional imagination, meditating on emotionally resonant objects or invoking hypothetical landscapes from memory, aligning with early 20th-century movements like Symbolism and Surrealism. At Tibor De Nagy, Ken Aptekar's "Says Me. Says You?" (also through March 2, 2024) presents 16 works on paper inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts, updated for the 21st century using social media as a pictorial strategy. Aptekar began the series in 2020 during the pandemic while sheltering in Burgundy, creating a scriptorium in a small village in the Morvan forest. He uses small brushes, calligraphic pens, and gold leaf to express melancholic subjects, political frustrations, and the madness of daily life.
