Free Performance Art: 48-hour online marathon of global performance art against coronavirus

digital · 2026-04-27

From March 31 to April 1, 2020, the Free Performance Art initiative offers 48 hours of free online performance art by artists from Brazil, China, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the USA. The project is a collaboration between Human Installations (Kyrahm and Julius Kaiser, Rome), Art Performing Festival (Gianni Nappa, Naples), Corpo Festival and CAPPA (Sibilla Panerai and Ivan d'Alberto, Pescara), Collective Signatures (Francesca Carol Rolla, Formentera), Global Making Art Network (South Korea), and Night Italia (Italy, USA). The platform streams video performances, artist films, and documentaries previously shown only at museums, galleries, and festivals. Some artists, including Marco Fioramanti, will connect live from their homes. The organizers aim to offer creative counter-response to the pandemic and hope to expand the network. A second edition on May 2 will feature live-streamed home performances. Nicola Fornoni, from Brescia (a city heavily affected by COVID-19), is creating the performative project "Red Zone" about daily life in quarantine. The initiative was prompted by coronavirus containment decrees forcing people to stay home.
